Now that Dr. Voght and I have completed our examinations of Jennie and Marius, I think I may safely draw a few conclusions regarding what happened to them in Europe and what ought to happen now. I know many of you have been concerned, and moreover have been fielding questions from their friends without adequate information; hopefully I will be able to remedy the lack.

First: both Jennie and Marius will be well, in time. Jennie is simply exhausted, and suffering the aftereffects of severe powers overextension; time and rest will put her right again, and Dr. Voght tells me she will be able to receive visitors, if she wishes, after she's had a good night's sleep. Marius's condition is more complicated, but I have great confidence that with time and help he will recover as well.

The details of their misadventure are necessarily confidential, but in broad strokes, since their example may prove instructive: Jennie and Marius's difficulties ensued after Marius lost control of the empathic powers he gained after feeding from Manuel de la Rocha, who Marius apparently contacted upon leaving the school in order to manage his nutritional needs. The three of them were caught up in a destructive empathic loop which triggered panic and flight responses to perceived threat or the prospect of dealing with authority figures; while entirely accidental, the loop was nevertheless particularly intense for its kind, and by the time we finally located them, none of the three of them were in their right minds. On the appearance of school staff, the loop triggered an extreme panic reaction, the results of which unfortunately caused Manuel serious injury. He remains under medical care in Monaco, and Marie will be staying with him until his doctors stabilize his condition.

I see no particular reason to discipline Jennie for her part in the affair; she apparently attempted to contact her father and the school several times despite the constraints of the loop, and the property damage in Monte Carlo, while unfortunate, was an entirely involuntary event brought on by powers backlash. Marius, on the other hand . . .

After extensive consultation with Drs. Voght and Samson, I have decided to allow Marius to remain at the school. Normally, as maladaptive as his mutation has proven, I would refer a case like his to Moira at the Muir Island facility, but Marius demonstrates a crippling phobia where hospitals are concerned. This phobia was one of the root causes for the behavior the trio exhibited while suffering from the empathic loop, and Leonard and I have decided that a facility like Muir--no matter how objectively suitable it may be for his physical needs--would prove irreparably damaging to Marius's psyche. Combined with his continuing need to learn and maintain control over his mutation, it's entirely possible that the school is the only place for Marius now.

Disciplinary action for his many errors in judgment proved more difficult to assess. When I confronted him with the evidence of his actions, it became very clear that not only was he ignorant of them, he was disgusted. He appreciates that what he did was wrong, but given his mental state at the time of commission I hesitate to place the full brunt of responsibility on his shoulders. He will be undergoing therapy and assisting Dr. Voght in the infirmary for the foreseeable future, and that will, I hope, be an end to the matter.

The girl that was recovered in Marius's hotel room remains in the infirmary. I am relieved to report that her condition appears to far predate her entrance into Marius's sphere; certainly he took advantage of her catatonic state, but he was in no way responsible for it. I will do my best to awaken her, and she will be remaining at the school for therapy afterward, at least until her family, if she has any, has been located and allowed to make their wishes known. David, if I could request your assistance in this matter, please? I think your particular combination of expertise and experience could prove very helpful.

Out of respect for Marius and Jennie's privacy and confidentiality, please do not discuss the details of the Monte Carlo incident with the students. I know many of them are concerned and will likely not be satisfied with the parts of the truth we may reveal to them, but the full story is for Marius and Jennie to reveal, should they choose, and to the extent that they choose. As far as the students need know, Jennie simply overstayed her summer vacation, and the three of them had a powers-related accident that resulted in injuries. If any of the students ask questions you cannot answer, refer them to me.
