I'm looking up a Tai Chi school in the area, maybe even trying to find my old sifu so I can get around to trying to pass my student-teacher test. Also, I'll be taking out some of the kids interested in Tai Chi to regular classes with me, since there's no way I can work around teaching them myself if we're doing this long term. I'm Not Allowed. Yet.
Still, either way, I've got that lot covered.
But.
I'm sure there are others among the kids who might not mind taking up a particular Martial Art that isn't related to the self-defense classes we teach as part of the curriculum or Tai Chi.
So - any suggestions as to a form of Martial Art which might suit one student better than another? Cause while I'm at it I can do a blitz and find out about schools in the area that teach those too and suggest that to the kids. Or we can arrange something here at the school for them.
Well? As Aurora might say, chop chop people!
Edit : ...I'm just going to find a nice wall to beat my head on now. Yep.

We've got a lot of folks...

For those of us who like _real_ combat, I'd be happy to pass on what I've learned in my years in the Real World.
But hey, it'd probably do a lot of the kids some good to get a little discipline.

Date: 2004-10-07 09:37 am (UTC)Gah.
Date: 2004-10-07 09:39 am (UTC)But my point stands. Lots of folks want to do pretty forms and look good while they do it. Real fighting is never pretty. It's ugly, and people get hurt.

Re: Gah.
Date: 2004-10-07 09:42 am (UTC)I pretty much agree. There's some value to the pretty crap, but when it comes down to it, Triple Nuclear Tiger Style Wu Shu Thai Do is just hitting someone in the head with a fancy name.
Don't get me started
Date: 2004-10-07 09:47 am (UTC)And there is some value to the pretty crap - there can actually be half-decent moves dug out from around all the frou-frou nonsense.
I spent about a year or so with an ex-Israeli grunt learning everything I could. Invaluable experience. Absolutely invaluable. Weren't you a leatherneck, Cain, for a while there?

Date: 2004-10-07 12:04 pm (UTC)She's got herself into a royal snit.
As far as her suggestion goes - I'd say we'd almost have to talk to them, see what their interests are. Not too many of the kids are into the harder styles that are more my area of interest.
I just get the feeling a lot of 'em are gonna be picking on the "Hey, that looks _cool_!" method.
